Nutreco makes major acquisition in Canada

AMSTERDAM – Nutreco, the world’s largest fish feed producer, has acquired the animal feed division of Maple Leaf Foods for $437 million. The Canadian company has a twenty percent market share in its home market. Maple Leaf’s Shur-Grain (Central and Eastern Canada) and Landmark (Western Canada) have annual sales of $570 million. Nutreco embarked on a new strategy in the recent past. It sold its salmon fish farms and now is adding animal feed producers to its stables of companies in a range of countries, including Mexico, China, India, Indonesia and the U.S.A.. Nutreco has also opened a new factory in Brazil where it makes special feeds. The new Canadian acquisition employs 1,200 people in eighteen factories.
