GRONINGEN - The widely distributed and popular Bos Atlas (Bosatlas in Dutch) was conceived by P.R. Bos, a teacher in Groningen. The first edition with hand-drawn maps was published in 1877, titled Bos' Schoolatlas der geheele aarde. Later editions were just named Bosatlas. The current edition is its 53rd. The atlas recently saw the 10 millionth copy run off the presses. Still published by Wolters-Noordhoff, the Bosatlas also has French and Swedish editions. P.R. Bos remained the editor of the atlas until the 15th edition of 1902. That the noun Bosatlas has its own entry in Dutch dictionaries should surprise no one.
