GRAND HAVEN, Michigan - One of the choisiest pieces of real estate in Western Michigan recently was put up for sale. The massive concrete-and-glass mansion has an asking price of $7.5 million. Chicago investor Robert van Kampen built it in 1993 on a wooded dune that overlooks Lake Michigan. It is known as the Stonegate Estate.

The ‘one-of-a-kind contemporary castle’ is a 13,000 square-foot modernistic single-family home. The property includes 800 feet of lake frontage and 28 acres of ‘virgin forests’. Van Kampen died two years ago.

The selfmade multimillionaire made his fortune through his Van Kampen Mutual Funds. He also was known as a collector of rare biblical manuscripts for which he founded the Scriptorium Center for Christian Antiquities. The priceless collection eventually will be put on display in a planned theme park in Florida.

At his Grand Haven home, Van Kampen had also built a climate-controlled 7,500-square-foot scriptorium, and topped it with a tennis court. Among the numerous features of the house is a lobby-level waterfall.
