Hamlet grabs headlines with release of history book and CD

SINT ANTHONIEPOLDER – Named after a Dordrecht patron saint, the polder and the similarly named hamlet in the Hoeksche Waard have a long history which was reemphasized recently through the release of a new book with CD on the history of the polder’s windmill. Miller Gerrit Knol traced the history of both the 400 hectare polder and its windmill. Anyone wondering which of the two is oldest should remember that no polder can be built without a water pumping system, the role of the windmill. The polder dates from the mid 1300s, while the windmill at the current site dates from a century later. This should not surprise anyone, since windmills could be dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere if a better location was found. The book/CD release coincided with the recent Open Monument Day, a country-wide open house event held to showcase historic treasures.
