Ring on leg tells history of migratory godwit

Tags: Excerpts from the Windmill

NIJ BEETS – Bird watchers who recently spotted a ringed godwit near this Frisian village, used a digital picture of the migrant to identify the ring’s number and were amazed that the bird had been ringed ten years earlier at a spot only a few hundred metres away from where it was seen nesting. The godwit was tagged as a young chick just above its knee and carried a number logged by Vogelstekstation Arnhem. Godwits, which migrate to Africa each year, are known to live as long as ten year or more.
