Volunteers set to sweep Amsterdam canals for garbage

Tags: Excerpts from the Windmill

AMSTERDAM - City people visiting the Netherlands may have thought that Dutch cleanliness is a commodity only readily found among the Dutch abroad, in places where at Dutch spring festivals people turn out in droves to scrub the streets. A new foundation, introduced as Plastic Whale, plans to show visitors of the Dutch capital that cleanliness is very much desired on the canals as well. Hence its modern-day version of an organized cleaning event, billed in antiquated Dutch spelling as Oud-Amsterdamsch Plastic Visschen. The organization is far from antiquated since it uses social media to man 20 boats for the sweep. Dozens of volunteers jumped at the opportunity for Plastic Visschen.
