MAURIK – The Dutch continue to face deadly reminders of the Allied bombing sorties against targets in the Netherlands to obstruct the German war effort. Just recently boatloads of sludge dredged from river and canal bottoms and transported in barges past towns and villages turned out to contain unexploded ammunition as well. Experts removed the mechanisms from these thousand-pounders inside the hull of the barges after which they were blown up ashore. While the military anti-bomb squads were doing their work, nearly residents were ordered to stay inside their homes.
