Birds and bees offered free housing accommodation

Tags: Excerpts from the Windmill

ENSCHEDE – Dutch nature lovers have taken their interest in bats, birds and bees to a new level, literally. While in other countries ‘hotels’ of every shape are springing up, the Dutch have instead constructed one with bricks and mortar in similar material used to build the shells for housing. The country’s first ‘flora- en faunaflat’ is located in Assen, the new addition is located in Enschede’s Wooldrikspark. Called Bird Hotels in other countries, they offer birds a home for the nesting season while special openings in the structure allow bats and butterflies to enter their respective spaces. Other insects could find accommodation in the tower as well. Nature lovers see Bird Hotels as living and continuously changing Works of Art, requiring persistent efforts to maintain them and develop them further.
