BURLINGTON, Ontario - A group of thirteen students and two teachers from the local Nelson High School will be travelling to the Netherlands this Spring, to participate in Liberation anniversary celebrations in the central Dutch town of Apeldoorn. For many years, Burlington and Apeldoorn have enjoyed growing friendship ties, to be cemented in a twinning agreement during the celebrations.

The Nelson students will be the ‘Official Student Delegation from Canada’ for the 60 anniversary events in Apeldoorn. Five years ago, the friendship ties between the high school and Apeldoorn began with a first visit to the Netherlands by another group of Nelson students. Since then, a number of student exchanges have taken place. The origin of the Burlington – Apeldoorn ties can be traced back to the visit in 1995 of the multi-school Burlington Teen Tour Band, which then for the first time participated in the Apeldoorn Liberation festivities.

As part of their field trip to the Netherlands, the Burlington-area students also will attend a four-day International Youth History Conference.
