Apeldoorn still needs to clear much wartime ammunition

APELDOORN - A subsidy by the government will allow the municipality to continue clearing a WWII munitions depot and its surroundings near the village of Hoog Soeren. Work had been halted because of a dispute over funding. The depot was built by the Germans to warehouse munitions captured in other countries. After the war, Canadian and Dutch demolition teams only cleared one third of the scattered munitions, mainly bullets and grenades. Six years ago, a concerted effort was started to clear the remainder. The project’s completion date is December 2008.
