A day in the life of the Mighty Eighth

by Meurs, John

When author John Meurs was a nine-year-old boy living in Nazi-occupied the Netherlands, an American B-17 bomber crashed on Sunday, November 26, 1944, behind his house near the town of Apeldoorn. He always wondered about what had happened in the air before the crash on that day. He eventually researched the history of that B-17. He quickly learnt that the aircraft bomber was part of the 8th Air Force Air Combat Command. The author then focused his research on the 33 other heavy bombers of the Mighty Eighth that were lost that day, collecting the personal stories of the veterans who survived it, from families of the lost crew members, and from witnesses of the crashes. These first-hand recollections, captured in this book, provide a compelling and terrifying account of the reality of war. This book can also be seen as representative for the thousands of other Allied aircraft downed over the Netherlands during WWII, many of which remain buried in the country’s soil.
