Verloren land Verloren land

Een herinneringswerk aan Schokland

by Terpstra, Pieter

A unique study of an abandoned island in the Netherlands that reappeared and now is a Unesco world-class protected heritage site. The choppy, and often dangerously stormy Zuiderzee claimed Schokland in the late 1850s when a royal decree forced the impoverished population off the island. Most of the evacuees rebuilt their lives in towns along the sea’s eastern coastline (particularly in Kampen and Vollenhove). The author finished his manuscript in the early 1940s, just as the island reappeared, as part of the newly drained Noordoostpolder. This study was rediscovered shortly before Schokland became an addition to the Unesco’s list.
