Sea Change in a Dutch Fishing Community

by Van Ginkel, Robert

The Dutch fishery sector, and not it alone, daily faces unpredictable fishing stocks in the sea, a volatile market and state interventions. In his book, the author shows how Dutch fishers met these challenges since the beginning of the eighteenth-century. Particular attention is given to the fishery on the island of Texel, and how the national and international situation affected the social-cultural structure in Texel. The author is a university lecturer in cultural anthropology at the University of Amsterdam with a special interest in maritime research.
