Beatrix in Ballingschap
Vijf jaren uit de jeugd van onze koningin 1940-1945
by VanderMey, Albert
The author details the Canadian years (1940-1945) of Dutch Queen Beatrix, based on interviews with people who remembered the Royal family's stay in Ottawa. Helped by the photographs, the author skillfully narrates the text taking his readers on a behind-the-scenes look at the Orange family. Included are Princess Juliana's efforts to reach out to fellow Dutch people living in Canada at the time. Several pages lift the veil on this largely forgotten episode of Dutch soldiers reporting to a Stratford, Ontario site where they received training for overseas duty in World War II. The author describes Princess Juliana's efforts at teaching languages and making sure her children mastered Dutch in an English speaking city.
