In 2023, major banks worldwide reported record-breaking profits, with the three largest banks in the Netherlands, Rabobank, ING, and ABN AMRO, earning a staggering €18 billion. These profits, driven by fees and interest on customer deposits, primarily benefit shareholders, leaving both customers and the planet behind. Despite society’s shift towards sustainable living, driving electric cars and using paper straws, traditional banks continue to finance industries that harm the environment and our communities. They offer little value for money and remain neither climate-focused nor customer-centered.
Most customers are unaware of the true costs of banking. Freelancers might think they’re only paying €10 a month, and businesses may assume it’s €20. In reality, the average freelancer pays around €60, and companies often pay hundreds each month. Banks are making far more from their customers than is visible.
